Session Suggestions

What language, technology, or topic do you want to talk about / participate in?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Effective testing practices

I'd be interested in a discussion of effective testing practices. For example:

    - How should we adapt our testing approach to the nature of the project? E.g. degree of requirements uncertainty, impact of errors, importance of time to market, willingness to take on technical debt.
    - Should we focus more on unit tests, more on acceptance tests, or equally on both? Or are we doing too much automated testing?
    - Is it worth the effort to write business-readable acceptance tests (e.g. using Cucumber)?
    - GUI automation: threat or menace?

    • From software consulting to product startup

Many technical people end up doing software consulting. Consulting is a tough business, since all you've ever got to sell is hours. Should you do a startup? Should you build a product? How do you move from consulting services to selling a product?

      • Discussion: Sexy and modern web design

I'd like to get a discussion group, or perhaps a fishbowl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishbowl_(conversation)) going to discuss, learn and teach about the latest in web development and design techniques and technologies. A few ideas I have to help seed the discussion are below, but add more in the comments please.

        - PJAX for modern web navigation (see Github)
        - HTML5 tips and tricks
        - Responsive web design
        - Mobile first design strategies

        • Continuous Delivery (CD)

I would love to attend a session focused on continuous delivery.

There is a lot of buzz around teams that practice CD, I would love to talk with people about their experiences implementing a CD process.

If we are lucky we might even get the guys from Thought works to come and share some of their incites.

              • Modern Concurrency

The old-school way to do concurrency is to instantiate a bunch of pthreads or fire up a whole bunch of processes. There are more modern ways to develop concurrent Apps:

                1) Grand Central Dispatch. libdispatch is a a task queue library available on iOS, Mac OS, and FreeBSD.

                2) The Cell processor in the Sony PS3 is very powerful if you can map programs to its stream processing model.

                3) There has been a rise of asynchronous event-based servers like EventMachine, Twisted, and Node.js.

                4) There has also been a rise of functional languages that implement the Actor pattern such…

I have been working with ES and CQRS for a few months now and have had a lot of exposure in the early days before they had names.
I think it would be good to get a few bright people in the room and talk about the various approaches, strengths / weaknesses of the patterns and how they work in concert

What are some other approaches, toolkits, and techniques for rapid prototyping or "composable" programming where you snap together pieces?

                                        • Emacs

I'm happy to talk about Emacs. How I set it up, why I like it, some of the neat things it can do. I also used vim for 5 years before making the switch.

I previously gave a talk at PyCon 2ish years ago on the topic of the importance of loving your editor. In general, I'm pretty passionate about having good tools.
