From software consulting to product startup

Many technical people end up doing software consulting. Consulting is a tough business, since all you've ever got to sell is hours. Should you do a startup? Should you build a product? How do you move from consulting services to selling a product?

        I'd love to hear more about how to transition from a consulting to selling products -- similiar to SEOmoz and 37Signals. Anyone have experience with this?
